Description
The Home Office are leading a cross government programme of activities which seeks to replace caesium-137 irradiators used in biological and biomedical research facilities within the UK, where a viable alternative technology or solution exists. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) with Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS) acting as their agent has been instructed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to establish and support the collection of High Activity Sealed Radioactive Source (HASS) through a suitable disposal route. The NDA Group have been tasked with enabling a disposal route for these sources into Sellafield. Note, Sellafield is the current waste management route for sealed sources. NTS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NDA which has extensive and proven expertise in irradiated fuel management and transporting nuclear materials.
This Contract is for 6 Irradiator Units and £2m - £3m has been allocated for these initial 6 Irradiator Units. There may be a further 3 Irradiator Units that may also fall within the scope of this Contract, for which additional budget (up to £1m - £1.5m) would be provided by the Authority, should their collection and processing be required. The budget and approvals are secured for the initial 6 Irradiator Units and should the collection and processing of the additional 3 be required, it would be subject to additional budget and governance approvals.
