Description

TEG (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge, or “European Certificate in Irish”) is a professional language testing service provided by Maynooth University’s Lárionad na Gaeilge (The Centre for Irish Language). We offer standardised Irish language proficiency exams and certification for learners and skilled users of Irish alike who wish to obtain an independent qualification in Irish that is recognised nationally and internationally. TEG is the only independent certification system available for Irish and the only system that is broadly aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the most widely used international framework for measuring language ability. TEG exams cover levels A1 to C1 of the CEFR, examining four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Lárionad na Gaeilge is a member of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE), an association whose members include major European professional language testing organisations. ALTE monitors and regularly audits TEG examinations to ensure that they meet the highest standards and international best practice. TEG has been awarded the ALTE Q-mark three times, in 2015, 2020 and again in 2025 as confirmation that our exams meet all the core requirements of ALTE's 18 quality standards. TEG has now been in existence for over 20 years and over 23,000 candidates have taken the exams during that time.
