Description

The MMO would like to gather evidence from English case studies about livelihood strategies The objectives of this work are to: 1. Review the literature on fisher livelihood adaption, paying attention to gender, age and life course 2. Identify research gaps and collect new evidence/data where necessary through fieldwork in England and/or secondary qualitative analysis of existing social research data (e.g., ESRC repository, past funded projects where possible according to consent/ethical procedures) 3. Develop a typology of adaptive livelihood strategies within current day fishing communities (different typologies could be developed for different types of fisheries e.g., beach launched/ harbour, inshore/offshore, finfish/shellfish...) 4. A theoretical model/map based on evidence, which outlines potential influencing factors in the choice of livelihood strategy (e.g. financial risk, lifecourse/age, available capital and social support...), and implications of different strategies for the sustainability and resilience of fisheries and their associated fishing communities 5. Recommendations for further work including baseline data collection to facilitate social impact assessments of management decisions 6. Generation of material summarising this work and its findings for wider organisation
