Description
In recent years, menstrual hygiene management has gained increasing recognition "as an issue of social justice within the context of public health" as a result of the work of a global coalition of academics, nongovernmental organisations and grassroots activists.
Since 2016, Newcastle Universities Students Union (NUSU) has made menstrual care products freely accessible from their Student Advice Centre. Newcastle University students launched an online petition calling for free menstrual care products on campus and NUSU Student Council voted unanimously in support of the stance that "the University should fund free menstrual care products across campus". This stance was also endorsed by Newcastle University Feminist Society and the NUSU Marginalised Genders Officer. Attendees at NUSU Student Council expressed support for their tuition fee investment being used towards this proposal.
Newcastle University Executive Board endorsed this stance in early 2019 and is now looking to implement it on Campus for all students.
