Description

This procurement is for a new service contract for healthy lifestyles services, which will support adults to make healthier lifestyle choices. The current Healthy Lifestyles Service contract that supports the prevention and management of health behaviours was commissioned in 2017 and will expire in March 2024.

Background and Rationale The major causes of premature death in the UK are cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and liver disease. These conditions are all linked to the following four lifestyle risk factors.

• Smoking • Excess alcohol • Poor diet (linked also to obesity) • Physical inactivity

These behaviours are responsible for 40% of disability adjusted life years (years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death) in the UK. Yet for many people, they can be modified by a change in lifestyle and can help people significantly reduce their risk of disease and help to achieve long-term health as well as health and social care and wider system savings.
