National Household Travel Survey 2024

In accordance with Goal 8 of the Department of Transport’s National Sustainable Mobility Policy, the National Transport Authority wishes to undertake a National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) of 4,000 households throughout the Republic of Ireland between September 2024 and early December 2024. The purpose of the survey is to gather travel information statistics for the Authority’s ongoing transportation planning role, as well as to provide essential travel data for the update of its regional transport models, the development of additional transport modelling tools and monitoring and research on travel and transport. This survey will represent the fifth such NHTS - the first having been undertaken in 2012 and the most recent in 2023. The 2024 survey will also serve as a monitoring update on the 2022 and 2023 surveys. As such, the Authority is also aiming to obtain and compare cross-sectional travel-related statistics. I.e. Observed travel patterns at distinct points in time. The NHTS can help to understand relationships between travel patterns and other variables, like remote or hybrid working, sustainable mobility policy interventions, expansion of broadband internet connectivity, online shopping and parcel delivery, electric bikes, e-scooters, etc. that may be introduced or change over time. At a high level, the scope of services that would be covered under a contract will require the supplier to carry out the following tasks: review survey and research design; prepare and execute a Communications Plan; conduct a pilot survey using mixed sampling methods; develop and document the NHTS 2024 methodology; administer survey instruments and collect data; data processing, analysis, and quality control; produce and deliver interim data files; produce and deliver various monitoring reports and technical notes; prepare data weightings; produce and deliver final data files; create interim and final maps of sampled households; produce Draft NHTS 2024 Report; produce a Statistical Calculations file; produce tabular outputs; produce a Methodology and Quality report; and produce Final NHTS 2024 Report.
